The Perugias were a merchant family from Trieste. Nina Perugia (c.1825-1892), one of the 15 children of Joseph Landauer and Rosalie Bauer of Budapest, married Achille Perugia (1822-1865) of Trieste. One of their daughters, (Eugenie) Louise Perugia (1854-1943) married Arthur Sassoon (c.1840-1912). Her sister, Marie Perugia (1862-1937), married Leopold de Rothschild (1845-1917) in January 1881. The wedding was one of the social events of the season and was attended by many famous guests including Disraeli, and the Prince of Wales. The marriage produced three sons: Lionel Nathan (1882–1942), Evelyn Achille (1886–1917), and Anthony Gustav (1887–1961).
