Halton Estate and 1, Seamore Place, Receipted Accounts

XII/42/1-14 (000/71 and 000/115), 19 boxes

Receipts for household expenditure, originally preserved in the bank's records, series XII/42/1-14. The receipts relate to both Halton and Alfred's London residence, 1 Seamore Place. The receipts concern general domestic and estate expenditure for Halton estate, including garden accounts, private accounts, letters and receipts for accounts with coach builders, nurserymen, builders and decorators, engineers, fuel merchants, farm suppliers, chandlers, chimney sweeps, ironmongers, Horwood & James (solicitors), the Post Office Telephone Service, insurers, corn and seed merchants, caterers, timber merchants, builders' merchants, household provisioners, butchers and other grocery suppliers, gun suppliers, tailors and railway and canal companies. It is likely that these general household expenses were paid from New Court accounts, hence their retention in the bank's records.

Although most of the receipts are for general domestic expenditure, some files include accounts with jewellers, art dealers and valuers, booksellers and stationers, photographers, Covent Garden Opera House, and ticketing agents; however, provenance researchers looking for detailed information about Alfred's purchases of art, jewellery and objects will find few papers here, as much of this expenditure came from Alfred's private accounts, and these records have not survived.

Originally classified as XII/42/1-14, these receipted accounts have been accessioned as 000/71 and 000/115. Early receipts, 1885-1887 concern the Halton estate farm; receipts for 1888-1889 concern Halton Parish. Receipts for general Halton house expenditure begin in 1890 and end with Alfred's death in 1918. Papers in accession 000/71 have been listed in detail; work is ongoing to list the papers in 000/115, the first four boxes, covering the period 1885-1900 have been so listed.
