New Court estate: leases and other sundry papers

Sundry papers relating to the New Court estate, including copies of census returns, and papers concerning agreements, rents and leases, insurance, and sundry building work.

The papers includes early documents relating to the lease of 'New Court' by Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836). Also included is report from the night of 10 May 1941 recalling New Court during the 'London Blitz'.

New Court, New Court estate, lease of New Court by Nathan Mayer Rothschild, 1809

Papers relating to the lease of New Court by Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836) in 1809. In that year Nathan acquired the lease of No.2, New Court for £750, as a home for his family and as the centre of his London business interests. The family moved into New Court in March 1809. In 1815, Nathan signed a new 21-year lease for New Court for £175 per annum.

  • Lease, signed by Charles John Wheeler for 2 New Court, 15 March 1809;
  • Letter from Mr Burton regarding payment for leasing 2 New Court, 7 April, 1809.

These items originate from a tin trunk labelled ‘Box 64’ in the New Court vaults containing various items selected on grounds of historical interest by an unknown hand. 

New Court, New court estate, furniture of Nathan Mayer Rothschild, sundry papers, 1806; 1809

Papers relating to furniture of Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836) at New Court. In 1809 Nathan acquired the lease of No.2, New Court for £750, as a home for his family and as the centre of his London business interests. The family moved into New Court in March 1809. 

  • Invoice, 7 November 1806, Furniture bought from Fildes, John, Cabinet Maker and Upholder addressed to N M Rothschild;
  • Inventory, 1809, furniture sent to London by Pickford. [presumed at the request of Nathan Mayer Rothschild].

New Court, New Court estate, sundry insurance and rent receipts:

  • receipt for a year’s insurance of £9,750 on New Court paid by N M Rothschild & Sons to the Sun Fire Office, 1850;
  • receipt for a quarter's rent of £123 for New Court, paid by N M Rothschild & Sons to the City of London, 1857.

These documents were removed from the Archive at some time and framed for display at the New Court offices; their provenance in the collection is now unknown.
