Michael Bucks (1904-1984)

Michael Bucks was born in north London in 1904. He joined N M Rothschild & Sons as a clerk in 1924, working his way up through the clerical ranks. In the Partners' Christmas Gift Book for 1931 (000/318) he is recorded as a 'clerk'. In Rothschild Relish (London, Cassell, 1970), Ronald Palin recalls Mr Bucks in the Managers' department, as assistant to Hugh Davies, who had succeeded Samuel Stephany as General Manager, N M Rothschild & Sons. Much of the day-to-day running of the business was left to the General Manager, a position which Michael Bucks occupied from 1946, supporting Anthony de Rothschild (1887-1961), who as Senior Partner was faced with the task of building the business back up after the war.

Made a Partner at New Court in September 1961, Mr Bucks is depicted in The Conversation Piece of 1963, the painting by Norman Hepple of the Partners in the Partners' Room, Old New Court. In the early 1970s, Michael Bucks served as chairman of Rothschild Intercontinental Bank, and held a number of other external non-executive including the Chairmanship of Cussons. Mr Bucks retired from N M Rothschild & Sons in 1974, after 50 years' service.

In 2021, the Archive was gifted a number of items from the Bucks family relating to Mr Bucks' service with N M Rothschild & Sons. These included a New Court 'Staff photograph' album from 1937 (000/2736/1) (see Staff Department: Staff Photographs), and a commemorative album for the rebuilding of New Court, 1962 (000/2736/2). (see New Court: Photographs). Also included in the gift were examples of the New Court Commemorative medallion, 1965, (000/2736/3) (see 000/508 and 000/2297), an M M de Rothschild Frères commemorative medallion, 1967 (000/2736/4) (see 000/2089), and a BRINCO Commemorative medallion (000/2736/5) (see 000/624/7).
